Volunteer Now!

Here are some ways to get involved in the local community!

Annual Salvation Army Christmas Depot – December 12-19, 4725 Virginia Beach Boulevard.  Volunteers are needed 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. to help distribute toys, clothing and food to families in need. Contact Shelby Moore at shelby_moore@uss.salvationarmy.org for availability.

Garden of Lights – Now through January 1, Norfolk Botanical Garden. A large part of the display’s success is due to its volunteers directing traffic, manning donation tables and flower carts, and more. Daily shifts are 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. To volunteer visit the Norfolk Botanical Gardens website or click here.

Backpack Assembly - Saturday, February 11th, 9:00 a.m. to Noon.  At almost 100 members strong, we feel sure we can fill the 15 volunteers needed from DT100 to help fill weekend backpacks with food for needy children! Contact Cameron Rountree to take some time and lend a hand!

If you know of any upcoming volunteer opportunities that you think DT100 members would be interested in, please send them to Kelly Stefanko at kstefanko@hotmail.com.

Hip Huggin Tip

Christmas Tree Recycling

As we deck the halls this holiday season, let’s remember that all the waste we create will have to go somewhere eventually, and Christmas trees can take up a lot of space! Luckily for us, trees are easily recycled as yard waste, and Norfolk residents have options:

For Residents on City of Norfolk Curbside Waste Collection

Christmas trees may be left at the curb as part of yard waste collection. All decorations, including lights, tinsel and ornaments, must be removed. No request for special collection is needed.

For Residents of Apartments or Multi-family Units

Trees may be taken to these locations through January 14, 2012:

  • 1176 Pineridge Road - Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • 1195 Lance Road - 24 hours a day. 7 days a week
