Holiday Hop!

DT100 Members Keep Tradition Alive with Annual Holiday Hop

Downtown 100 members and their friends enjoyed a festive night of hopping between Granby Street hot spots as part of its annual Holiday Hop.  Perhaps one of the longest running DT100 traditions, the Holiday Hop was clearly a draw, as large numbers of both new and veteran members packed Wonder Bar, followed by Scotty Quixx, then finally the Jewish Mother.  A number of DNC staff and alumni members attended, adding nostalgia and a "reunion" feel to the gathering.  As usual, the food served and the raffle were sources of curiousity and built excitement as the night went on.  Chances to win gift certificates to each of the participating establishments were sold, and over $500 was raised by generous DT100 members to help fund the UpCenter’s toy drive! Fortunately for DT100 members, the Spring Hop is only a few months away.

Long time (and alumni) members Kelly Stefanko, Khalilah Legrand,

Noel Gramlich, Kim Miller and Eileen Aquino pose at Scotty Quixx's as they

recount the many holiday hops they have attended together over years past.

Downtown Norfolk Gets More Beautiful all the Time!

This past November, volunteers from CSX Corporation, the City of Norfolk and residents came together to increase the green space in Downtown Norfolk. Over 150 men, woman and children helped plant over 6,000 trees, shrubs and groundcover from the corner of York Street and Duke Street and along Waterside Drive at City Hall. Volunteers also installed sod and mulched all the new plants.

The project was made possible by a $60,000 donation from CSX Transportation, a national sponsor of City Year, a nonprofit AmeriCorps national service organization.

Hip Huggin Tip

Ring in the New Year with some resolutions that make your life a little more green!

“My goal is to increase my 6:00 a.m. workouts to five a week, Monday through Friday.” ~Luke

“I resolve to call my mother more often.” ~Holly

“I want to make an impact and be a super-positive role model for young people in the community.” ~Aaron

Do any of these resemble your own New Year’s resolutions? When making your list of worthwhile goals this New Year’s Eve, try adding in one or two green resolutions and help make a difference for the environment. In the long run, it’s just as healthy (and maybe easier to keep) for you as, say, getting to the gym every morning at 6:00 a.m.

  • Recycle – For every trash can you fill, about 70 trash cans of waste are used to create that trash.
  • Give up plastic and paper bags – You have a ton of bags already, just keep them in your car.
  • Help the postal carrier out – Visit www.CatalogChoice.org and stop getting all those unwanted catalogs.
  • Switch to cold water in the washing machine – Hot water isn’t needed to clean your clothes, that’s what soap is for. Save up to 90% of your machine’s energy and extend the life of your clothing.
