What's Up Downtown
  In this issue:

The holiday season is one of the most exciting times to be in downtown Norfolk. Festive lights, meeting friends over a warm cup of cocoa, toasting the season, enjoying the annual presentation of A Christmas Carol, and it all kicks off with a signature event, the Grand Illumination Parade!

On Saturday, November 19th, at 7:00 p.m., thousands will line the parade route as the skylines of Norfolk and Portsmouth are lit and the streets are filled with marching bands, floats, dancers, and yes, Santa Claus himself!

The parade route will take a few different turns this year, but there is still plenty of viewing space. New this year is the opportunity to reserve your “Street Seats” along Waterside Drive. Make your reservations early and get the best seats in the house!

With so many coming to visit, it’s the perfect time for DT100 members to become ambassadors for our fair city. Over 500 volunteers are needed to keep the parade moving smoothly, from visitor guides to parade staging to parking attendants and more. Just a few hours of your time are all it takes to help put the smile on the faces of our guests, both young and old! To find out how you can enjoy the “Sweet Life”, click here.

Volunteer Now!

Here are some ways to get involved in the local community this month!

Volunteer Work Day for the Hoffler Creek Wildlife Foundation - Saturday, November 12, 2011, 10:00AM - 4:00PM.  Like working with your hands and being outside?  This opportunity involves trail maintenance, trash pick-up, and general maintenance.  For more information and to register to volunteer contact Dana Karstensen-Bryan at (757) 686-8684 or e-mail hofflercreek@hofflercreek.org.

The 27th Annual Holidays in the City Grand Illumination Parade -  Saturday, November 19, 2011.  There are over 500 volunteer positions and a new parade route this year --- so now more than ever we need DT100 members, their family members, friends and colleagues to volunteer!  Have a hand in the marquee holiday event in downtown Norfolk – the experience will be SWEET!  Click here for an application.

Mentor our Youth – The Up Center’s Team Up mentoring program currently has 150 boys on the waiting list for a mentor. Adult women are also needed as mentors to pair with girls and couples can volunteer to be matched as a pair with a mentee.  This program was formed to fill the gap created in the community when Big Brothers/ Big Sisters of South Hampton Roads closed.   For more information about volunteering as a mentor or enrolling your child as a participant, please submit your request online or contact Mary Midyette at 757-397-2121 ext. 317.

If you know of any upcoming volunteer opportunities that you think DT100 members would be interested in, please send them to Kelly Stefanko at kstefanko@hotmail.com.

Hip Huggin Tip

Shrink That Holiday Waste-line

Did you know that each year between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, households produce 25% more trash! Here are some ways you can keep that holiday waste-line from expanding:

  • Wrap presents in something functional, such as a reusable shopping tote or pretty scarf.
  • Give the gift of time! Take loved ones to a special dinner or show in lieu of exchanging gifts.
  • Gift cards are one-size-fits-all! Nearly all downtown venues offer gift cards or passes that your friends and family will be sure to enjoy – dinner, movie, hockey, stage show, it’s all there!
  • Break out the fancy china – reusable utensils and dishes make your guests feel special and your table looks so much more festive.
  • E-cards are not only quick, they can be interactive. Send your family members on a trek through trivia questions or build a virtual snowman to get to the holiday greeting.

Enjoy the holidays to their fullest and let your loved ones feel special. Happy Holidays!
