What's Up Downtown
  In this issue:

A Letter from the Chair Elect

Dear Fellow DT100 Members:

Over the past year, the steering committee has met both formally and informally, to articulate how a civic-minded emphasis could benefit the DT100 Members. I am excited to announce this year marks the beginning of a new opportunity for the DT100: introducing the Civic Engagement Committee.

VISION

The vision of the Civic Engagement Committee is to foster a conduit for civic engagement on issues relevant to the DT100, Downtown Norfolk and our Region.

OBJECTIVES

This committee will have two broad objectives. First, the Civic Engagement Committee will regularly attend and participate in meetings impacting our vision and communicate this information back to the DT100 members. Examples include attending DNC Member Briefings and City Council Meetings, as well as engaging in relevant current events through various media outlets. Second, the Civic Engagement Committee will present issues relevant to the DT100 members to city leaders.

MEMBER QUALIFICATIONS

Any member is welcome to join the Civic Engagement Committee. The following responsibilities will be expected from each committee member:

1. Active committee meeting participation.  Date, time and venue to-be-determined.

2. Regular attendance in civic-minded meetings, which meet the committee's objective. Frequency will be shared among committee members based on each member's schedule constraints.

3. Ability to adequately summarize relevant matters from civic meetings and communicate back to committee and DT100 members.

ACTION

Initially the Civic Engagement Committee will be limited to 5 active members, who will be selected by the Steering Committee based on the applicant's qualifications. If you are interested in joining this committee, please contact me and plan to attend an informational meeting on September 13 at noon in the DNC Board Room; lunch will be provided.

We believe as the Civic Engagement Committee matures, it will give the DT100 both a voice and a "seat at the table" on relevant matters. I look forward to working with fellow members who desire to channel their passion for Downtown Norfolk through this committee.

Thank you for your consideration.

The NET Continues and Expands!

Dear Downtown 100 Member,

Starting this week the NET Bus will have a new route. Not only will the NET continue its service Downtown, it is adding multiple stops in the Ghent section of Norfolk. We feel that the NET will prove to be a critical component to a multi-modal transportation system and greatly compliment the Tide.

As many of you know, the NET faced possible elimination during the last round of budget discussions. Many people worked very hard to not only save the NET but to expand its service. Therefore we are asking you to please support the NET and encourage ridership. There will be a fee to ride the NET of $1.50. You will be able to use the HRT Passes for both the NET and the Tide. For a complete list of locations to purchase passes, click here.

If you have any questions please let me know. Click here to view the new route. The schedule of times is below.

Thank you for your support.

Hip Huggin Tip

The Tide Has Arrived!

And thank you for choosing mass transit! By choosing to ride the Tide, you decreased your carbon footprint and so much more!

  • A round trip ride on the Tide (7.4 miles) saved you 2/3 of a gallon of gas. Over a year, that results in a savings of 35 gallons (~$131 in fuel costs) and 1,000 grams of air pollution!
  • Used regularly, those who use public transit lose an average of 6.5 more pounds per year than those who do not, and increase health by walking to and from their stops.
  • Mass transit removes drivers during peak driving times, reducing congestion.
  • Riders have reduced stress levels and contribute to livable communities as they frequent those stops’ business focal points (how many of you went to Bean There Café after getting off at MacArthur?).

Which brings us to the question – How have you used mass transit since August 19th, and how has it impacted you? Email us with your story; they’ll be posted in next month’s edition of What’s Up Downtown?.
