The Tide is Running!

REMEMBER

Light Rail Safety is No Accident

It begins with you!

Anyone who walks or drives in downtown Norfolk on a regular basis knows that at long last, The Tide has arrived. In the midst of the excitement of hearing the Tide's bell or whistle, we must also be on high alert. As HRT has often reminded us, Light Rail Safety depends on all of us being aware and taking personal responsibility for our own safety.

DNC's Public Service Ambassadors will be seen at key intersections passing out helpful information about The Tide and also gently reminding everyone of "the laws" designed to keep pedestrians and drivers safe when sharing the road with Light Rail.

When You're Driving When You're Walking
• Learn to share the road. Tracks and roadways cross at several points downtown. • Be alert. Trains are fast, very quiet and can approach from either direction.
• Where a driving lane is designated, DO NOT drive on
the tracks.
• Only cross at designated crosswalks.
• NEVER park in a designated travel lane. • NEVER walk down the middle of the tracks.
• There are many new signs in downtown – some of
which are Light Rail specific. Learn what they mean - and obey them. Familiarize yourself with the signs at GoHRT.com.
• Obey signs at pedestrian cross walks. Don’t try to “beat the train”. The trains cannot stop quickly - and you could lose!

Note: Very soon, the police will be issuing warnings to those who are not following the rules. At some point in the near future, they will also begin issuing tickets to those who do not comply.

Although the trains are now running, they will not accept passengers until August 19th. Three full days of celebration (August 19, 20 & 21) will usher in The Tide with free rides for all. Fare operations will begin on August 22nd.
