Get ready for a full-blown glass extravaganza in the NEON this spring! The Chrysler Museum of Art and the Perry Glass Studio will host the 46th Annual Glass Art Society Conference from June 1-3, welcoming more than a thousand glass artists and collectors to Norfolk. Long known for its encyclopedic glass collection, and for the innovative performances of the Glass Studio, the Museum will showcase to an international audience just how far it’s come in the glass arts field. It’s also a special opportunity for the NEON District to share our public art and the stellar arts partners that make up our neighborhood.

The conference, entitled Reflections from the Edge: Glass, Art, and Performance, also brings exciting programming that is free and open to the public. Wednesday, May 31 in the NEON District is officially the Day of Glass with one-of-a-kind, live glassmaking demonstrations throughout the day at the Perry Glass Studio, at Work | Release and in the Glass Wheel Studio’s parking lot for TCC’s Three-Ring Circus. The public is also invited to a gallery hop around town on Friday, June 2, and First Fridays, held in the NEON just for the conference. BJ Griffin and the Galaxy Groove will be jamming out at The Plot, starting at 5pm. You can also make your own music that night – just find a piano on a city sidewalk as part of artist Luke Jerram’s Play Me, I’m Yours installation.

Bike Month in NEON

Situated right between Ghent and Downtown, you might say the NEON District is one of the most bikeable areas in Norfolk. Protected bike lanes on Llewellyn Avenue lead right into the neighborhood while a bike lane on Olney Road puts riders into the heart of NEON. As summer quickly approaches, it’s the best time of year to dust off your cruiser. Bike Month starts May 1 and there’s no shortage of events this year, Norfolk’s 7th annual bike celebration. In NEON, we are particularly excited about the second Glow Ride on Friday, May 19 at 8pm. Last year’s first ever critical mass ride brought out almost 300 riders sporting glow sticks, neon shirts and lighted bikes to cycle through Downtown, Ghent and Freemason. Earlier that same day, The Plot will be hosting a Bike to Work Day Pit Stop with free t-shirts, bike goodies, snacks and bottled water for all cyclists commuting to work. Just to say thanks for the bike love.

Property Updates

As you read this, volunteers are outside sprucing up The Plot. Every spring it needs a little TLC on the planters and beds, the vertical garden and the common area spaces. We are a couple of weeks behind schedule this year, but no doubt The Plot will be looking great for next month’s First Friday and the glass conference.

In business news, there is a new tenant in the former Alchemy space at 804 Granby Street. Unplugged, if the special exception application is approved on May 25, will be a restaurant with live entertainment. Also, the Hurrah Players will host a grand opening ceremony for the Hugh R. Copeland Center on May 20. Bearded Bird Brewing celebrates their grand opening the week prior on May 13 with live music, food trucks and six new beers on tap. Congratulations on the long-awaited spaces to both!

Lastly, read on for some bits and pieces about NEON District infrastructure. Demolition recently started on the warehouse at 117 W. Virginia Beach Boulevard to make way for a new residential building. No news on when construction will start. NEON’s wayfinding project is nearing completion of phase one, with installation of several signs and glass discs in the sidewalk in May. The project also includes parking signage at the Harrison Opera House and Chrysler Museum of Art for NEON patrons in the evenings and on weekends. For a preview of the signage, click here.
