Urban Kayaking Tours on the Downtown Waterfront

Summer is upon us and there is yet another fun way to experience the downtown waterfront, urban kayaking tours! Starting May 26th, Nauticus is partnering with Chesapean Outdoors to offer a new kayak rental program and guided tours on the Elizabeth River. Based on feedback from last summer’s kayak program, there will be late afternoon, sunset rentals, and a completely new guided tour concept. The kayaks will be docked in the Half Moone marina. Rentals will be available Thursday and Friday from 5pm to 8pm and Sunday from 10am to 8pm. The cost is $20 per hour. Double kayaks are $30 per hour. Reservations recommended. Guided tours are $50 per person and are offered daily at 10am and 6:30pm. For reservations please call 757-961-0447 or visit

What’s Your Perception of Dog Parks?

The City of Norfolk and ODU have partnered to research community perceptions of dog parks in Norfolk. The study is funded by the Stanton Foundation in hope that research into dog park success will result in practical guidelines for future dog park construction. Apparently our city really loves dogs, Norfolk was chosen as a case study because we have the 2nd highest amount of dog parks per capita (second only to Seattle, WA) in the U.S.! And you don’t have to own a dog to respond: they are looking for feedback from all Norfolk residents. Click here to take the survey.

Work Out. Drink Up. FREE June Downtown Outdoor Boot Camp and Happy Hour

As part of our Healthy Downtown initiative, DNC hosted our first ever FREE outdoor boot camp and happy hour in May. It was a sold-out success, so we are going to continue to hold them on a regular basis. This month’s boot camp is in partnership with Fitness First Health and Wellness and will be held on June 13 at the green space across from the Federal Courthouse on Granby Street. Once the 40-minute calorie blasting boot camp style workout is done, DNC gives participants a ticket good for one free happy hour drink at Leone’s to celebrate all of their hard work! Space is limited, so make sure you register soon and be sure to keep an eye out for all Work Out. Drink Up. boot camps.

Summer Eating - Grilling Ideas

As the weather gets nice and lots of fruits and veggies are in season, we like to move our meal prep from the oven out to the grill.  Want to take your meal prep to the grill but don’t know where to start? Here are a few tips to make grilling your meals quick and easy.  Try to make all the items for your meal (think - vegetables, starch, and protein) on the grill to keep the heat out of the kitchen and get you and your family outside.  Aluminum foil is your friend when grilling. Wrap potatoes, vegetables, corn on the cob, or meat to keep in flavors, seasoning, and moisture while grilling.  Pair a cool side like bean salad, fresh fruit, mixed greens, or vegetables and hummus with your grilled entree to speed up dinner prep.  An added bonus of raw fruits and vegetables is that they provide us with some fluid, contributing to our hydration, which can become especially important in these summer months.  If you don’t have time to grill multiple nights of the week, buy and make your meats in bulk on the grill over the weekend and use them throughout the week cold on salads, or reheated for lunches.  Pair leftover meats with bagged salad mix for a quick lunch on the go.
