November 2017 Newsletter

What do you buy for someone who has everything? We bet they don’t have fig jam, a guitar string necklace or an origami mobile. But they could very soon! Come shop with NEON this holiday season when we throw a big, eclectic market celebrating everything handmade, weird and, you guessed it, artsy. More than 35 Hampton Roads artists, makers and crafters are coming together at the Plot on Saturday, December 9th from noon to 5 pm for the third annual NEON Holiday Market. Plus there will be two food trucks (Karnage Asada and Bodacious Pizza), hot coffee and live music from Brett Williams, In the Light and the Strolling Santa brass band players. Free parking is available at Harrison Opera House.

Start planning your shopping now with these fine vendors!

Holidays in the NEON

Spend this holiday season where the warm glow of lights twinkle all year long and there’s never a shortage of festivities. Whether you have serious gift shopping to do or need a family-friendly activity to entertain the troops, the NEON District has it all here for you this December. To set the mood, start off with everyone’s favorite, The Nutcracker, then swing into right into Holiday POPS!, both at Chrysler Hall. Now that you’re feeling festive, start shopping! D’Art Center and Chrysler Museum of Art both hold annual sales of pieces from the gift shop and handmade, one of a kind artworks. Check out Gifted and the Members’ Appreciation Sale this weekend and get a jump start on gifting.

Once the shopping is finished and gifts are wrapped, spend some QT with your loved ones. Try making your own glass ornament at the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio (classes sell out quickly though!) or bring the whole fam to a daily noon hot glass demo when everyone needs to get out of the house. And to wind down the year among friends, get tickets to the Pushers’ New Year’s Eve bonanza, The Pushie Awards Show, celebrating all the theater’s funniest performances from 2017. Happy Holidays from your friends in the NEON District.

Property Updates

It seems Commonwealth Tattoo will be serving up fresh ink in the NEON District pretty soon. We’ve seen the storefront quickly come together over the last month, as well as improvements to the second floor in their studio at 804 Granby Street. Speaking of freshening up buildings, across the street in the 800 block, Exotic Home has a new paint job on all three bays of the store. It’s looking attractive and bright, just what shoppers like to see during the holidays. And as mentioned in last month’s newsletter, Exotic Home’s warehouse at 809 Granby Street is currently for lease. It’s a great space with ample room for a brewery, yoga studio or artist studio. Contact Wheeler Real Estate for more information.
