Every June DNC hosts our Annual Meeting to acknowledge and celebrate our accomplishments over the past year, mix and mingle with over 500 business and community leaders and present two very prestigious awards. This year, it was our pleasure to honor Jane P. Batten with the 2015 Peter G. Decker, Jr. Downtowner of the Year Award for her efforts on the new Slover Library and Drew Ungvarsky with the Roy Badgley Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding and numerous efforts to make Downtown Norfolk more livable and engaging.

In addition to the awards, DNC is pleased to welcome the elected officers and directors for the upcoming year. Chair, Jim Wofford, General Manager, MacArthur Center; Vice-Chair, Melodi Albert, Vice President Management Development, Dominion Enterprises; Treasurer, Taylor Harrell, Senior Vice President Hampton Roads Region, Southern Bank. Newly elected to the Board are Nancy Howard, Collins Enterprises; Raffaele Allen, Marathon Development Group; John Porter, Field Guide; Lynn Crump, Monarch Bank; Richard Ottinger, Vandeventer Black LLP; Michael Glenn, Luna Development.

Downtown Norfolk Restaurant Week – July 12-19

It’s almost time for summer Restaurant Week and we have some exciting additions. We all know that our region is known for spectacular fresh seafood, so many of our participating restaurants are featuring a variety of delicious seafood dishes perfect for summer, as well as many other meat and vegetarian options.

Another fun addition is creative, custom cocktails developed by our participating restaurants especially for Restaurant Week. These specialty cocktails are not part of the fixed-price menus, but you may just find a new favorite and convince the restaurant to keep it all year long.

Thanks to our Restaurant Week sponsors:

DNC Welcomes New Ambassadors

We are happy to introduce two new members of the DNC Ambassador Team you will see taking care of business within the Downtown Improvement District.

Alisha Luke – Alisha has been going through our extensive training program and will be on the streets in uniform in early July. Alisha came across our Ambassadors when she was visiting Downtown and was so intrigued she asked an Ambassador what the job was all about. She liked what she heard and promptly applied for a position. She is also a student at Norfolk State University and is a welcome addition to our team.

Melvin Johnson – Melvin joined the DNC Ambassador team a few months ago and has quickly become a huge asset to our team and always has a bright smile on his face. He loves working Downtown because of the great scenery, vibrant atmosphere and the fact that no two days are the same and there is always something going on.

Downtown Norfolk Council Urban Eye Reports

Urban Eye Reports are another service DNC provides for the Downtown community. Damaged street light pole or street paving? Construction barrel or barricade problem? Zoning violations? Let us know if you are experiencing any issue like this and the DNC will be sure to get it reported and in the right hands at the city immediately and follow up to make sure the issue is taken care of. Click here for our Urban Eye Report and keep the link handy for when you need it. You can also always give us a call at 757-623-1757 and ask for our Director of Operations Mike Devin or email mdevin@downtownnorfolk.org

Reminder

First Fridays will not take place in July. Please enjoy the 33rd Annual Great American Picnic & Fireworks, July 4.
