The Road More Traveled

We have always known that Downtown loves F.R.E.D., and if his mileage since the new and improved vehicle debuted in February 2015 is any indicator, Downtown residents, workers and visitors are loving our Free Ride Every Day service more than ever!

It’s hard to believe that F.R.E.D. has traveled more than 7,000 miles all within the 48-block Downtown Improvement District in less than a year. That is like driving from Norfolk to Beijing, China! It is very impressive for a battery-powered people mover. F.R.E.D. is available by calling 757-478-7233, Mon-Thu, 11am-9pm, Fri, 11am -10pm, Sat, 2pm-10pm.

Winter Weather Reminders

Our minor brush with a snow event recently gives us the perfect opportunity to send a reminder to the Downtown community regarding winter weather policies and procedures.

Norfolk City Code (Sec. 42-34) dictates that it is the property owner or occupant’s responsibility to clean snow from sidewalks abutting their property.

DNC’s Clean Team Ambassadors will first focus their efforts on these identified priority areas: MacArthur Square, curb cuts and handicap ramps, high pedestrian traffic areas throughout Downtown and sidewalks adjacent to vacant properties.

Once these priority areas have been taken care of, the Ambassadors will then address other areas in Downtown that need assistance.

If physical limitations hinder your ability to remove snow and ice, please contact the DNC office at 757-623-1757.

If we are faced with another storm please be patient and keep in mind that snow removal from our 48-block district is no small task.

Heart Healthy Downtown

February is American Heart Month, and while this a time for the entire country to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease, we want to be sure to remind Downtowners about the importance of heart health and Downtown resources and events that can help support a healthy lifestyle.

Downtown has a variety of gym options so close by that it’s hard to find an excuse not to go before, during lunch or after work. Click here for a list of our member athletic facilities. All of them have some kind of deal. Fitness First Health and Wellness offers special rates for DNC members. Jim White Fitness has a printed handout for a 1 mile, 2 mile, 5K or 5 mile Downtown route. You can even park in their lot and pick up a temporary parking pass and head out from there. You don’t have to be a member of Jim White Fitness to take advantage of this opportunity and it is completely free.

Bharat Amin is a Downtown resident that walks every day in the city, around Harbor Park and Town Point Park and he is also the 2016 Chair of the Hampton Roads Heart Walk that takes place in October 2016. He hopes that the Downtown community will take advantage of this opportunity for people to initiate changes in their health while raising funds to help prevent heart disease and stroke. Teams are created by employees from local companies.

If you or your company is interested in learning more or registering, visit or contact the American Heart Association at 757-628-2610.

Stay tuned for more exciting healthy Downtown initiatives launching this spring
