In 2017, we will celebrate a major milestone in the history of the City of Norfolk when Naval Station Norfolk celebrates its 100th anniversary. Founded in 1917 on the grounds of the Jamestown Exposition following the United States entry into World War I, Naval Station Norfolk is now the world’s largest naval base.
The Navy plays a significant role in Norfolk and throughout the region, contributing to the fabric of our community both socially and economically. To celebrate and observe this momentous occasion, Norfolk City Council established the Naval Station Norfolk Centennial Commission. The commission is working to plan appropriate celebratory activities throughout 2017.
Join us for our November Member Briefing at MacArthur Center to hear from representatives of the Navy and City as they provide a historical overview of the naval base, share some of the plans being developed, and discuss how the community can play a role in the celebration.
Following the program you are invited to stay and enjoy a sneak peek of the MacArthur Center Ice Palace in Center Court.
