Hailing from Castlewood, Virginia (population 2,045) in the remote backwoods of Southern Appalachia, 49 Winchester was born when Isaac Gibson, his childhood best friend Chase Chafin, and guitarist Bus Shelton decided to step off the front porch on Winchester Street and take their music wherever they could.
“It’s always been a family affair,” says Gibson. “When you see it as lifelong friends instead of business associates or hired guns, it just lends itself to longevity.”
Since its formation, 49 Winchester has stayed true to its mission of transcending humble beginnings with a raw, passionate sound that’s earned them widespread acclaim across country, Americana, and rock circles.
Recorded in studios across the country — from Virginia to North Carolina and Nashville — Leavin’ This Holler delivers the band’s signature blend of rollicking country and searing rock, but with a more mature, reflective approach.
“We’ve all grown a lot in our personal lives since Fortune Favors the Bold,” Gibson explains. “Several of us have started families, and that’s shaped the lyrical themes of this record.”
From upbeat country tracks like “Hillbilly Happy” to sorrowful ballads like “Tulsa,” fiery guitar riffs on “Make It Count,” and Gibson’s resonant vocals on “Traveling Band,” the album captures a more focused sense of purpose. Songs like “Fast Asleep” and “Anchor” even feature the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, adding lush string arrangements inspired by classic country acts of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.
“No stone left unturned sonically — we got it exactly where we wanted it,” Gibson says.
Now, with over a decade behind them, the band remains rooted in Castlewood. For Gibson, home continues to be an endless source of inspiration.
“There’s no place like home,” he reflects. “I’ll be riding down some backcountry road, the hum of the motor and the thoughts running through my mind sparking the next song.”
