On Monday, July 13 at 7:00 pm EST, the MacArthur Memorial will present a free virtual lecture by James M. Scott, author of Empire of Ashes: Truman, Hirohito, and the Descent into Total War. A virtual Q&A will follow.

Historian James M. Scott will talk about his new book, Empire of Ashes, which tells the harrowing story of America’s bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the dramatic struggle to end World War II. Scott will discuss the final months of the Pacific War, including firsthand accounts from previously unheard survivors of the atomic bombings, internal debates within the Manhattan Project, and the political maneuvering between President Truman and Emperor Hirohito that culminated in unprecedented violence and ultimately Japan’s surrender.

A Pulitzer Prize finalist and New York Times bestseller, James M. Scott is the author Black Snow, Rampage, Target Tokyo, The War Below, and The Attack on the Liberty, and co-author, with Jack Carr, of Targeted: Beirut. In addition, Scott, a former Nieman Fellow at Harvard, is a sought-after public speaker, who leads battlefield tours and lectures at institutions around the world. He lives with his wife and two children in Charleston, South Carolina, where he is the Scholar in Residence at The Citadel.
