The Soul of Langston project will conclude with Daron P. Stewart’s one-man show, Soul of Langston, at Norfolk’s historic Attucks Theatre. In partnership with Norfolk Public Libraries and the City of Norfolk’s Believe in Learning initiative, Arts for Learning Virginia teaching artists are leading a series of interactive workshops this fall that explore the impact and legacy of American poet, playwright, and civil rights activist Langston Hughes. Using a variety of art forms, including visual art, music, songwriting, percussion, poetry, and dance, participants are connecting Hughes’ themes of racial identity, equity, and cultural pride to contemporary issues.
This project culminates in a public performance of Daron P. Stewart’s one-man show, Soul of Langston, on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at 7:30 pm at Norfolk’s historic Attucks Theatre. This culturally significant venue provides a powerful backdrop to celebrate Hughes’s poetry and enduring influence. Fused with rhythms of jazz and blues, Soul of Langston is a powerful portrayal of the life of Hughes.
Tickets to this event are free, but registration is required.
Support for this program is provided by Arts for Learning Virginia, with additional funding from the Norfolk Arts and Humanities Commission, the Virginia African American Cultural Center, Arts Alliance, and the Virginia Commission for the Arts, which receives support from the Virginia General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.
