Celebrating Black History Month in Downtown Norfolk 

This February, Downtown Norfolk is alive with the sounds, stories, and spirit of Black History Month. From soul-stirring performances at the historic Attucks Theatre to hands-on workshops and community wellness events, there are various ways to honor the past and support the future of our vibrant Black community.  

Whether you’re a long-time local or just visiting for the day, use this guide to plan your month of celebration, education, and inspiration. 

 

Arts, Culture & Performances 

Downtown is the heartbeat of Norfolk’s arts scene. 

  • Black Voices & Visions Exhibition:  The inaugural exhibition of The Gallery at the Attucks, a group show spotlighting the vision, power, and imagination of Black artists with connections to Hampton Roads. On display until April 3rd 
  • Mixtape First Thursdays: Head to the Chrysler Museum of Art on February 5 for the Film Break Society screening of Babylon (1980) at Mixtape. 
  • Afrobeats Fest 757: Catch the energy at the Wilders Performing Arts Center at NSU on February 21. 
  • The Path to Freedom: Experience a moving performance by the Hurrah Players from February 20–22 at Hugh R. Copeland Center. 
  • The R&B Lovers Tour: Norfolk has the honor of hosting the opening night of this national tour, bringing four of the biggest names in R&B history to one stage. February 13, Scope Arena.  

 Education & Hands-On Workshops 

Learn a new skill or dive deep into the innovations that shaped our world. 

  • BHM Mental Health SeriesAttend Social Blend’s Mental Health Series in recognition of Black History Month on February 23, 2026 (6–8PM) at Saltine. 

 

In honor of Rosa Parks’ legacy, Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) is offering free fares on Monday, February 9. It's the perfect day to explore the city without worrying about parking!
