The nation’s first water-based National Historic Trail, The John Smith Trail is administered by the Secretary of the Interior in coordination with the Chesapeake Gateways Network and Chesapeake Bay Program. A network of water routes that covers approximately 3,000 miles extends along parts of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, DC. In addition to tracking the routes Captain John Smith traveled by boat, the trail highlights the natural history of the Bay.
