After the Civil War and Federal occupation, Norfolk found itself sadly lacking in both cultural opportunities and the wherewithal to support museums, symphonies, and art schools. This began to change in 1871 when Irene Leache and Anna Wood arrived to establish a female seminary that would be known as the Leache-Wood School. Miss Leache and Miss Wood would go on to influence the city’s arts community and inspire the organizations that lobbied successfully for the establishment of the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences (now the Chrysler Museum of Art). Their own personal art collections would form the core of the new museum. Chrysler Museum Gallery Host Josh Weinstein tells the fascinating tale of these two women, whose passion for the cultural arts still resonates today.
