Samson and Delilah (Samson et Dalila) by Camille Saint-Saëns, premiered in Weimar in 1877, dramatizes this well-known biblical story thrusting the Israelite warrior into the arms of the Philistine seductress who ultimately betrays him. Including the famous “Bacchanal” of the pleasure-loving Philistines, this opera is not to be missed. The dramatic tension sizzles when lauded tenor Derek Taylor (Samson) and one of today’s hottest mezzo sopranos, Katherine Goeldner (Delilah), heat up the stage. With his “ringing top” and “blazing good looks” and her “warm rich vocal tone and assured artistry”, both have garnered excitement in opera houses throughout Europe and the United States. Award winning director Paul Curran (Metropolitan Opera, La Scala) raises the bar in his staging of the temple’s fall and the opera’s mass dances that have long provided audiences grand spectacle. His work electrifies the unmistakable music composed by the genius behind Danse Macabre, Carnival of the Animals, and the masterful Organ Symphony. Sung in French with English Supertitles The orchestra for this production is provided by the Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
