Bike Month Begins Today!

For more than a decade, Norfolk has been celebrating National Bike Month each May. It’s a chance to showcase the many benefits of bicycling — and encourage more folks to give biking a try!

In 2021, we'll be celebrating as always, but with more focus on learning the ropes and biking in your neighborhood. Some annual events will return – join us for Bike to Work Week (and Day!) – but we also encourage you to bike solo or with friends and family. Bike to coffee or just around the block for some fresh air. With a focus on well-being and safety, we’ll be highlighting how you can #BikeThere during Bike Month and experience Norfolk’s expanding bike network and trails. Whether you’re riding for fun, fitness or with family, or taking essential trips to work or shop, you are part of a movement for safer streets, connected communities, a healthier planet and happier people.

Here are a few ways to stay engaged with and celebrate Bike Month!

Make a Plan!

Thanks to local partners, there's not a single day in May without some way to get riding. With so many events, we've created a handy, shareable calendar to keep it all straight. Download here or pick up a flyer from your favorite local bike shop. Just diving into the cycling scene? Shop Local

No bike? No problem. There are plenty of options across Norfolk to snag a new ride or upgrade your current cruiser. In Downtown, Pedego Electric Bikes offers rentals, private appointments and the latest in e-bike styles. Outside of Downtown, visit one of the handful of locally-owned bike shops. Many of the shops also host free regular rides, ranging from spandex road trips to casual neighborhood jaunts. Start bike shopping here.

To Go Pickup by Bike

Many of Downtown Norfolk's restaurants are still offering takeout and curbside pickup — which can easily be managed by bike! Why not get some fresh air and exercise while you're picking up grub from your favorite Downtown spot?

Practice Makes Perfect

Just now beginning your love affair with cycling? No time like the present to get more acquainted with riding on city roads. Check out the City's Bike Network Map to plan your route or map it out over the Elizabeth River Trail's 10.5 miles of urban pathways.
